The Silverback Marketing Round-up for last week discussed the 2012 Q2 Earnings Report for Google. The Silverback post one day earlier on July 19 provided a prologue to the upcoming release of the Q2 Earnings Report for Facebook. This report was going to be very interesting considering it would be the first earnings report since the company went public.
Let’s look at the positive statistics first. Facebook reported 2012 Q2 earnings of $1.18 billion, a 32% increase over the 2011 Q2 figure of $895 million. That is a hefty increase YoY, a figure that is very impressive considering the woes of the company after it went public May 18, 2012. More important, Facebook reports that revenue generated directly from advertising equals $992 million, a staggering total that accounts for 84% of the total revenue. The advertising revenue represents a 28% increase over the 2011 Q2 figures.
The user numbers in regards to the social network are also impressive. During the month of June 2012 the number of daily active users averaged 552 million, an increase of 32% compared to the same period in 2011. Monthly active users were 955 million as of the end of June 2012, a figure that compared to 2011 YoY is an increase of 29%.
The increases in revenue and users were outstanding news, but Facebook also experienced a large increase in costs during the second quarter of 2012. The company paid out a staggering $1.93 billion during Q2, an increase of 295% compared to the same quarter in 2011. It shall be interesting to observe how investors react to the earnings call considering Facebook stock continues to perform at a level far below expectations.
